The aim of the MBROLA project, started by the TCTS Laboratory of the Facult Polytechnique de Mons (Belgium), is to acquire a set of speech synthesizers for as numerous languages as possible, and provide them complimentary for non-commercial applications. Festival offers a general structure for building speech synthesis systems as well as consisting of examples of various modules.

MARY is an open-source, multilingual Text-to-Speech Synthesis platform composed in Java. It was initially developed as a collective job of DFKI's Language Technology lab and the Institute of Phonetics at Saarland University and is now being kept by DFKI.
